About The Artist

Landscapes

I am interested in painting landscapes particularly portraying remote, solitary locations.  Having lived most of my life in Otago and Southland, I have drawn inspiration from Central Otago with it's craggy mountains, big skies, tussocks, crisp, clear air and schist outcrops.  To the west, Fiordland with it's  misty mountains, waterfalls and beech forests provides endless inspiration.

Inspiration

For me painting is a way to combine creativity with my interest in tramping.  There's nothing like walking into a remote location to gather ideas and take photographs for the next series of paintings. My style of painting is evolving all the time and over the past year has become less about landscape per se and more about wilderness.  For me, this reflects an appreciation of the natural environment as well as a concern about the steady decline of the wilderness in the face of creeping human development. These paintings are all on stretched canvas using high quality, fade resistant oil paints.

Hope you enjoy the paintings...
